The Republic of Kosovo (1) is a small state in the southeastern part of Europe with a population of 1.8 million people covering and area of 11,000 m². It is not recognised as an independent state by Serbia, Spain, China, Russia and some other UN members. The legislation of the Republic of Kosovo (2) does not contain data on issuing visas for digital nomads. However, tourist visas are required by citizens of most countries if they want to stay in Kosovo for more than 15 days.

Kosovo has a moderate danger security level according to our rating. Jurisdiction has 58.3 points (from 100) for safety level in Numbeo crime rating (3). Homicide level (4) is 2.0 per 100,000 inhabitants a year. 

Crypto Payments

The Central Bank of Kosovo (5)  has issued several warnings about the use of cryptocurrencies. The latest, published on January 31, 2018, reminded persons that virtual money is not recognized as legal tender and that financial losses may result from investing in cryptocurrencies. However, there is no regulation for crypto payments in the country based on our information.

Crypto Salaries

In Kosovo, cryptocurrencies are not recognized as legal tender, therefore payment of salaries in cryptocurrencies is prohibited in Kosovo.

Legal

On February 27, 2018, the Bank of Kosovo (6) has announced the establishment of a permanent advisory group for evaluating and addressing regulatory challenges related to virtual money. In 2023 discussions about crypto regulations were still in progress according to the European council (7).

Taxation

The headline PIT&CIT rates are 10%. Capital gains are subject to the normal CIT rate - 10% based on PWC (8). Crypto mining has been temporarily banned (9) in Kosovo since January 2022. And there is no taxation procedure for miners.
